Normal skin contains cells called melanocytes that produce the brown skin-coloring pigment melanin. There are several conditions in which melanocytes are either abnormal or abnormally distributed. A pale area of the skin is the result of fewer or less active melanocytes, whereas a darker area (or area that tans easily) indicates more numerous or more active melanocytes. The condition that produce hyper pigmentation include melasma, brown spots associated with age or sun exposure, darks spots following acne particularly in skin of color etc.

Results can often be seen after one treatment but normally require a series of treatments for maximum results.

MELASMA

Melasma is a dark skin discoloration normally found on sun-exposed areas of the face. It is a very common skin disorder. Though it can affect anyone, young women with brownish skin tones are at greatest risk. Melasma is often associated with the hormonal changes and stress. It is especially common in pregnant women (often called the Mask of Pregnancy), women who are taking oral contraceptives, and women taking hormone replacement therapy. The sun exposure can make the melasma worse.
